LEADING LEGACIES: A SENIOR STORYTELLING PROJECT

LEADING LEGACIES: A SENIOR STORYTELLING PROJECT

This story-telling project is designed to engage seniors in the community through volunteerism, storytelling and sharing leadership experiences with emerging leaders. A committee of senior volunteers nominate and select 13 senior prominent community leaders to share their leadership stories.  The stories will be featured in Leadership Victoria's ‘How I Did It’ podcast at in-person events as well as virtually.

The 13-story series is organized by a team of seniors responsible for recruiting storytellers from across Vancouver Island, as well as planning the producing the events. Our senior volunteers are committed to showcasing stories from senior leaders that actively represent women, indigenous peoples and newcomers to Canada, while engaging actively in the community and working to reverse attitudes of discrimination and ageism.

This project is supported by New Horizons for Seniors Funding with key community partnerships at The Cook Street Activity Centre and Volunteer Victoria.

John's story

John McEown exemplifies positive leadership to support local arts and social services in so many ways.

After retiring from leading an insurance brokerage firm on Wall Street 34 years ago to move here, he began serving our community in humble ways. He signed up to deliver weekly meals with his Cadboro Bay church group at the Upper Room. After its merger with the Open Door, he helped to lead a successful capital campaign for the purpose-built Pandora Drop in Centre in 2005 that still serves hundreds of meals a day and other essential services to people experiencing multiple challenges.

His resources helped to “deinstitutionalize” the former youth detention centre in View Royal. He underwrote the complete transformation of a paved basketball court there into the stunning healing garden at New Roads.

At 98 years old, 2021 VCLA Award winner John McEown exemplifies the dedication to community leadership we aim to celebrate in this series.
