What Is Community Leadership?

Community is not driven by position, but by a powerful passion to bring a vision to life. Leaership is a set of actions and behaviours more than it is a philosophy. Anyone who is willing to put in the time can learn these skills.

Leadership in the community is less about inspiring your followers, and more about the hard work of finding and following that thread of a great idea together to create lasting change. That means we find the same values, get to know our team inside and out, and clearly communicate the vision so that the outcome seems almost obvious.

All of this happens within the dynamic push and pull of a community. We navigate the broader social, political, economic, and cultural forces to drive lasting change.

The Four Pillars

We organize the Leadership Victoria Community Development Program into four pillars of community leadership:

  • Know and Manage Self

  • Lead Through Influence

  • Navigate Community Systems

  • Make Things Happen

We work these four pillars through our Community Leadership Competencies Framework.

Our Approach to Learning

We teach through active engagement:

  • You are actively involved and choose your leadership development goals

  • You receive guidance from mentors and coaches

  • We know you already know many leadership principles, and will learn from you

  • We expect you to bring your past knowledge, opinions, and experiences to the program

  • We make each goal clear, so you see how it relates to you directly

  • We believe real life practice combined with theory; our Community Action Projects make things happen

We acknowledge and respect the Lekwungen-speaking peoples on whose traditional territories our organization works, and the Songhees, Esquimalt and the WSANEC peoples who historical relationships with the land continue to this day.
