How Can Your Board Make Progress?

In an ideal world, one strength of volunteer boards is that board members bring a diversity of expertise to help make decisions and problem solve for their organization. In reality, that doesn't always happen. Issues such as trust and openness (or the lack of it!) can get in the way, as can different leadership styles and conflicting agendas.

For some boards, each individual member's intentions may be good, yet the whole performs poorly. In the worst cases, decision-making problems create a climate of mistrust and undermine an organization’s mission.

As part of the Leading in Community workshops series run by Leadership Victoria, facilitator Sue Iles will lead Making Decisions to Make Progress. This workshop will teach how to diagnose the source of a decision-making problem and identify ways to improve board effectiveness. Participants will work with concrete topics such as effective agendas, minutes, and decision making criteria. Discussions will also address soft skills such as how to facilitate discussions, reach consensus, and be aware of the impact of values.

After this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Determine areas for improvement on a Board and address their “worry list”

  • Review/discuss and practice components for successful decision making:

  • Defining objectives/setting agendas/tracking progress

  • Using the knowledge around the table

  • The influence of leadership style on effectiveness

  • The degree of trust and openness around the table
