Does your board have difficulty arriving at a decision? Do you debate endlessly and then defer decision to a later meeting? Is there lack of clarity on who has the final say? Decision-making can difficult for many reasons, and how decisions are made can reveal a lot about how an organization performs. Poor decision-making processes can often result in wasted time, confusion, and frustration. Individually, everyone’s intentions are good, yet the whole performs poorly. And in the worst case, decision-making problems create a climate of mistrust and undermine an organization’s mission.
This session is all about learning to diagnose the source of a decision-making problem and identify ways to improve board effectiveness. Participants will work with concrete things such as effective agendas, minutes, and decision making criteria as well as the soft skills that address how to facilitate discussions, reach consensus, awareness of the impact of values.
After this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Determine areas for improvement on a Board – address their “worry list”
- Review/discuss and practice components for successful decision making:
- Defining objectives/setting agendas/tracking progress
- Using the knowledge around the table
- The influence of leadership style on effectiveness
- The degree of trust and openness around the table
About the Facilitator
Sue Iles has over 30 years’ experience in health care leadership roles, including direction for the island wide hospital accreditation and quality improvement processes. She has extensive experience in teaching Lean Design rapid cycle improvement techniques as well as leadership skills, and she provided Executive Coaching support to senior leadership across Vancouver Island. Sue has served as Chair of the Board of the Western Health Improvement Network, and on the Board of Community Living Victoria. She is the Past Chair of the Board of Impact BC, and is a Board Member of Leadership Victoria as well as an active participant on their Program Committee. She is a certified by Dr. John Carver as a facilitator in the “Policy Governance” model of governance.
Please note that this workshop runs 3 hours with a 15-minute coffee break. Lunch will not be provided - please bring a packed lunch. Coffee, tea, cookies and fruit will be available at afternoon coffee time.
