Harnessing the Power of Community for Change

Are you looking for a way to harness more power for the community issues you care about? Community organizing is an approach to connecting many people together in support of mutual interests and goals for a better future. In this workshop, you’ll learn:

  • skills and approaches for reaching out and gathering people around common goals;
  • how to understand the power structures that can be barriers or pathways to success;
  • steps to engaging decision-makers and amplifying the effects of community activism.

Joe Chrastil is a Regional Organizer with Industrial Areas Foundation Northwest (iafnw.org). He provides training and support for action-oriented community organizations that address a wide range of issues related to jobs, health care, education, immigration, education, housing, and transportation.

This workshop is jointly hosted by Leadership Victoria and Greater Victoria Acting Together (www.gvat.ca), with support from the Greater Victoria Savings Credit Union Legacy Foundation.

Please note that this workshop runs the full day with a 45-minute break for lunch. Please bring a bag lunch or be prepared to get take-out from a quick-service restaurant down the hill at Shelbourne Plaza. Lunch will not be provided. Coffee, tea, and cookies will be available at morning and afternoon coffee times.

If ticket prices, transportation, or child care expenses are a barrier for you, please contact us in advance for assistance. Limited bursaries are available.
