The Core Program has six components:

Opening Retreat

(Mid-to-late September; Friday morning to Sunday afternoon) for participants to:

  • Learn about the overall LV program, which includes:
    • experiential Community Learning Days;
    • personal leadership skill development;
    • team development and coaching;
    • mentoring; and,
    • team-led-and-developed community-based projects.
  • Explore personal values and leadership skills.
  • Begin to develop a personal plan to enhance skills.
  • Develop a community network of learning, leadership and support with fellow participants.
  • Engage in community issues and challenges specific to the Capital Regional District.
  • Explore opportunities to collaborate with community-based organizations as partners.
  • Connect with current community leaders as mentors, coaches, facilitators and role models.

Community Learning Days (CLDs)

(Five days plus Friday and Saturday sessions — October to June):

  • Theme-focused, hands-on, one-and-two-day learning events.  Themes include:
    • exploration of personal values;
    • leadership skills;
    • team development and collaboration;
    • presentation skills;
    • project management;
    • networking; and,
    • fund development.
  • Led by community-based facilitators and leaders from the Program Committee.
  • Sessions include “learning bursts” of information enhanced by immediate opportunities for application.
  • Discussion with panels — composed of community leaders, activists and organizations — for real-life, real-time exposure to current community issues.

Community Action Projects (CAPs)

  • Participants are assigned to Project Action Teams of five to six members to work, in collaboration with a community partner, on a project that will benefit the community.
  • This “Learning Lab “ enables  participants to apply their skills as a team while creating a difference in the community
  • Each team is assigned a coach, whose role is to:
    • guide and assist the team in its leadership development;
    • ensure that the project chosen by the team is manageable;
    • assist in connecting with community partners; and,
    • support and guide the team in developing their project from concept to reality.

 Individual Mentorship

  • Each participant selects personal and confidential mentors for the program’s duration.
  • Mentors are community leaders and volunteers who have a wide range of mentoring or coaching experience.
  • Mentors provide an opportunity for personal reflection, feedback and assistance for the participant’s individual learning plan.

Learning Framework

  • Assists participants to take charge of their own learning, based on the principle that effective leaders recognize that learning and leadership are inextricably linked:
    • Me with Me:  learning more about self and building personal leadership competence;
    • Me with You:  learning about self in relation to other individuals;
    • Me with Groups:  learning how to effectively contribute and lead in small teams and groups; and,
    • Me with Community:  learning to contribute to and participate in larger communities, e.g. community organizations, political organizations, corporate communities

Graduation

  • Celebrates participants in June at the community-sponsored graduation.
  • Showcases community projects.
  • Acknowledges and thanks community partners.
